  • 24,000 sign up to Beat the Street in first week

    172617220 jpg galleryCouncillors had hoped 20,000 people would sign up to Beat the Street, a new physical activity initiative that turns Swindon into a massive game. Since it was launched by Olympics runner David Hemery last Wednesday, 24,000 people have picked up a Beat the Street card at joined the game. Collectively, Swindonians have walked, run, cycled and scooted 64,000 miles between the brightly decorated boxes, placed at around half-mile intervals and which must be tapped with a Beat the Street card if you are to earn points for your chosen team in the game.

    BOX FOR HEALTH PosterScrappers Boxing Gym and Community Fitness Centre have launched a new 6 week course aimed at people with mental health conditions that feel they will benefit from physical exercise.

    Together, Suzie Reidand with support from Swindon Borough Council and volunteer coach Lewis Bird, we’ve decided to bring physical and mental health together. Physical activity has a huge potential to enhance our wellbeing. Even a short burst of 10 minutes’ brisk walking increases our mental alertness, energy and positive mood. Participation in regular physical activity can increase our self-esteem and can reduce stress and anxiety. It also plays a role in preventing the development of mental health problems and in improving the quality of life of people experiencing mental health problems.

    When is it?  Every Saturday at 9:00am.

    Where is it?  The event takes place at Marlborough Common, Marlborough, SN8 1DL. See Course page for more details.

    What does it cost to join in?  Nothing - it's free! but please register before your first run. Only ever register with parkrun once. Don't forget to bring a printed copy of your barcode (request a reminder). If you forget it, you won't get a time.

    The County has been developing its own website over the past few months and we are very excited about the launch of a site dedicated to tennis in Wiltshire. Previously our web presence has been via the main LTA website, and this new website will give us the ability to deliver Wiltshire content and resources.
