Thriving Spire Reds Netball Juniors
The club caters for girls of all ages from 6 upwards. Our weekly coaching sessions during the season are on a Thurs for 6-8 year olds, 9-11 year olds, 12 – 13 year olds, and for 14 + year olds, split between two great venues that we are fortunate to use; Chafyn Grove and Bishop Wordsworth Schools, our adults train on a Tues evening.
Spire Reds was set up by Helen Glasgow and Hannah Rogers in 2013. Helen had moved to Salisbury from Swindon, where she had helped set up Delta Blues NC, she arrived here and realised that there wasn’t a club in the city for the U11’s so created Spires.
We teach players everything they need to know to be a netballer - the essentials of teamwork, movement, attack and defence, ball skills, tactics and of course shooting, They start out playing High 5, and then graduate to 7's once they reach secondary school age. We are great believers in starting young, knowing that it fuels success later.
The club has grown quickly to 120 members with most sessions full, and in some cases unfortunately with waiting lists - something that we'd love to change with more funding - although we are always looking for enthusiastic adult members ! The growth has mostly been organic, through word of mouth, although we did a little promotion at schools with fliers and posters at some local schools during the early days
It’s been a great few years for the club, our U 14, and U 13 squads winning their leagues last year, our Adults winning the Salisbury League just last week, and several of our girls now playing for the Region, County and trialling for Team Bath! We are lucky to have a fabulous bunch of players – who work hard, and love their sport, a great coaching team, and a fantastic committee.
The Satellite Clubs intervention is a key part of Sport England’s Youth and Community Sport Strategy 2012-17, and aims to undertake transformational change in the way that young people are supported from school, college and other relevant settings into community sport – creating a sporting habit for life. Wiltshire and Swindon Sport (WASP) were able to support Helen with this funding.
