Trowbridge Basketball Club receives highly commended in national Satellite Awards 2015
Satellite clubsare extensions or outposts of community sportsclubswhich are established in a new venue, usually a secondary school or college and specifically targeted at the 11 to 25 age group.
Trowbridge Central Basketball Club are based at St Augustines Catholic School and with guidance from Wiltshire and Swindon Sport and Wiltshire Council they have linked with the school to provide a pathway for the pupils to progress with their Basketball from school to club level.
The club has been presented with a Highly Commended award for its role in inspiring young people to play basketball and helping them to sustain their participation in the sport.
The club also recognized the gap between competitive club teams and people wanting to start playing or returning to play basketball. The Satellite Club was developed to offer a social basketball session for all ages and abilities to attend.
‘I am very pleased with the way the club has grown. Players come back due to the friendly, supportive yet still competitive atmosphere’ said Vince Marriot volunteer coach and organiser.
Each evening the club runs a competition with teams of 6-7 people. Vince has seen a big improvement amongst the players as well as enjoyment, making friendships and gaining confidence joining with other people at the club. The competitive yet friendly and social format meets the needs of the people who previously weren’t good enough to get that element from the sport they enjoy within the main club teams.
The club meets every Wednesday 7 – 10pm at St Augustines School and anyone 16+ is welcome to attend.
