Sport England Programme - Sportivate review

sportivate inspired by 2012 artwork 1In April 2017, WASP completed its 6th and final year of delivery for Sport England’s Sportivate Programme. The programme was designed to enable more people to access sport and activity by means of ‘taster sessions’. WASP advertised this locally and received applications from a range of interested partners to deliver, from Sports Clubs, to individual providers and community organisations.

Over the 6-year period WASP had 7,985 11-25 years olds successfully complete a Sportivate project (Complete = attending 5/6 sessions or 6/8 sessions) with a further 52,127 sampling activity through Sportivate!

Activities and sports which WASP have supported have included; Aerobics, American Football, Athletics, Archery, Badminton, Basketball, BMX, Boccia, Boxing, Canoeing, Climbing, Cricket, Dance, Dodgeball, Equestrian, Fencing, Parkour, Football, Golf, Gym, Gymnastics, Handball, Hockey, Lacrosse, Mixed Martial Arts, Modern Pentathlon, Multisport, Netball, Rugby, Skateboarding, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Triathlon, Volleyball, Weightlifting and Yoga.

WASP have distributed approximately £400,000 to groups running Sportivate projects which has supported key elements that make these projects possible such as coach education, facility, hire, coach salary, retention activities, new facilities and much, much more.

Former Sportivate Lead for WASP Jordi Rose commented - “Sportivate for us as an organisation was a great success, it allowed us to meet and create links with new and existing clubs and organisations and allowed us to make a real difference to the levels of participation in Wiltshire and Swindon. The nature of the programme allowed us to visit the projects that were being delivered hence strengthening the link and also to use our other wide range of tools to ensure sustainability of the projects. I personally would like to thank all those who were involved either as a participant or a deliverer for making this such a successful 6 years”

Kevin Whitehorn, Beversbrook Facility Manager also commented “Calne Town Council has been awarded a number of Sportivate funds for a number of sporting events ranging from Archery, Mum’s Get Active, Athletics and Ladies Football to name a few. None of these projects would be possible or sustainable without support from Sportivate funding and WASP”

Participant Nicole Earley – “ Last year’s Sportivate sessions were brilliant and really fun! A great introduction to kayaking”
