Use of the Primary Sport Premium for Swimming 2016 – Update from the ASA

Primary School SwimmingSchools will be aware that the government funding to improve primary school provision of physical education and sport (the Primary PE and Sport Premium) is available for them.  The government has also confirmed that this funding will continue to be available until at least 2020.

To help schools understand how the funding can be spent on additional or enhanced swimming activities, the ASA has recently published comprehensive guidelines in consultation with the Department for Education’s PE and School Sport Team.

A Department for Education spokesperson said:

“Swimming is an important skill and a compulsory part of the PE curriculum for primary pupils. The PE and Sports Premium gives primary schools £150 million every year until 2020 to use as they see fit to improve their PE and sports provision, with many using it to top up swimming.  More than 96 per cent of primary schools reported the grant was having a positive impact on their pupil’s physical fitness, healthy lifestyle, skills and behaviour, with 87 per cent of schools saying that the quality of PE teaching has increased since 2012/13.”

Jon Glenn, Head of Learn to Swim at the ASA, said:

“It can be a bit of a challenge to understand how this funding can and can’t be spent. For example, it should not be used to deliver the minimum requirements of the national curriculum.  Schools can, however, use the funding for resources and training to improve the quality of the experience children receive and enhance the provision that already exists.  The funding can also be used to hire qualified swimming teachers or coaches to work with school teachers. Another way is for school staff to be given special training and access to resources to help them teach PE and sport more effectively.”
