About Golf

Golf is a precision sport where competing players use different types of clubs to hit balls into holes on a golf course whilst employing the fewest number of strokes. It is one of the few ball games that allows for each course to be unique with no standardised playing area, although all courses typically consist of either 9 or 18 holes.

Golf is a precision sport where competing players use different types of clubs to hit balls into holes on a golf course whilst employing the fewest number of strokes. It is one of the few ball games that allows for each course to be unique with no standardised playing area, although all courses typically consist of either 9 or 18 holes. The modern game of Golf originated in Scotland, with the first written record being James the 2nd's banning of the game in 1457, claiming it to be an unwelcome distraction to learning and practicing archery.

The play of the game involves starting by striking a ball from the tee, and once the ball comes to rest the golfer strikes it as many times as required to reach the green, where he or she then 'putts' the ball into the hole.

Golf clubs come in various lengths and head sizes, including drivers, woods, irons and putters, with each golfer allowed to carry a maximum of 14 clubs in their bag at one time during a round.

There are various governing bodies covering Golf in England, including the Golf Foundation (www.golf-foundation.org) English Golf Union (www.englishgolfunion.org) and the English Women's Golf Association (www.englishwomensgolf.org)
