Redlynch and Hale Cricket Club have been partnering with their local secondary school; The Trafalgar School at Downton to provide cricket coaches for the school’s extra-curricular activity program, which is branded as a satellite club. Over the past 3 years coaches Andy Church, Ian Coffin and Ian Dixon have spent a tremendous amount of time and effort to help upskill the students of Trafalgar.
Explaining the partnership, Andy said; “for most of the children, this is their first experience of organised cricket. It has been great to see how their confidence and skills have improved over the summer. Most respond very well to our coaching and behaviour is generally pretty good. We also get good support from the Schools P.E. Department.”
The relationship between Redlynch and Hale and Trafalgar had been existence in the past and with the support of Wiltshire Cricket the relationship was renewed in the summer of 2014. Wiltshire Cricket were able to help facilitate the renewal of this relationship and the team have been coaching cricket in the school ever since.
Andy; “Although we are fortunate to have a thriving junior section, we are always on the lookout for children who want to come and have a go! Engaging with the school again has helped our reputation as a well run, approachable and friendly club.”
Facilities can be difficult to access in the south of the county and The Trafalgar School have a fantastic new sports hall that hadn’t been available for use outside of the school. Due to the hard work put in by Andy and the team the school were able to open up their hall to the cricket club. In exchange the club made a donation to assist the school to buy new indoor cricket mats for use in their sessions.
Andy; “The new sports hall at Trafalgar is impressive. The lighting and space is good with double lane netting in place when it was built. By working with the school, we were able to negotiate use of this excellent facility for our own club in exchange for the coaching we provided for their students. As it is local to us, it saved trips into Salisbury or elsewhere to find practice facilities, particularly for our juniors pre-season.”
A huge thanks to Andy and everyone at Redlynch and Hale Cricket Club for setting such a high standard in their delivery and relationship building.
Thanks to funding from Wiltshire Cricket, Chance to Shine and WASP the satellite club will continue to be delivered in 2017 and beyond. If your club is interested in delivering a satellite club, please contact below.
