The School Games County Badminton competition took place at Tidworth Leisure Centre on Tuesday 31st Jan 2017. The 8 court sports hall was buzzing with 100 enthusiastic Badminton players representing 20 schools from across Wiltshire and Swindon. Once the games got underway everyone’s nerves settled and all were encouraging their team mates and cheering each other along.
The format for the competition is that each Key Stage has 5 teams who play each other. Each school team is made up of 4 players plus an optional reserve. The match consists of 5 games, 2 singles and 3 doubles. So it really is a team effort and everyone gets involved.
Event organizer John Murphy said “It was one of our best competitions yet, the play was excellent and the sportsmanship atmosphere was really great to see. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves, even those who were less successful.”
Once the tournament was in full swing we were pleased to welcome Nicola Cerfontyne twice British Singles Champion. The hall filled with great excitement with the presence of an international player arriving.
Nicola commented “I really enjoyed meeting all the players, organisers and volunteers at the WiltsSG17. I watched some good matches throughout the day and it was a very well run event. I had the chance to get on court with lots of the players which is always a fun experience and I hope it inspires them to pick up their racket and play more badminton.” Nicola was also pleased to be able to help with the presentation of the medals and trophies.
The Young Leaders were from Matravers School and they had been trained by John Murphy to be able to officiate the games. They did and excellent professional job which meant the competition ran really smoothly and to time.
The event was organised by 5 coaches from the CBN and it was John Murphy’s final year of organising the event. Steve Boocock CEO of WASP presented John with a trophy as a big thank you for all he has done over the years for School Badminton.
The winners of each group go through to the SW Regional Final which will be held at Bournemouth LEAF academy on 1st March 2017. Good luck to the teams that will be representing Wiltshire in the next round.
